The Alevi believe that when a person dies, all his ties to this world get severed, except for three things. Muharrem is a descendant and profound explorer of the community. In his encounters with old Fatme, a performer of the ritual songs, the nefessi, his knowledge of Alevi beliefs and philosophy is interwoven with her accounts of life with her husband, Sebahtin, a gifted saz player.
