A series of bizarre and ominous occurrences befall the Townsends, an English family living in an old French farmhouse, and seem to be connected to sinister events which took place during the War. Meanwhile, Gladys is being chatted up by a charming American, and Cecile is contemplating the possibility of a future which does not include Trevor.
A Foreign Legionnaire comes to ask Gladys for help in locating the grave of a fallen colleague's mother so that they can be buried together, and Trevor is not thrilled when the man – Rheiner, a handsome German – starts to show an interest in Cecile. Gladys is busy giving evidence in court, so Trevor starts making enquiries. However when he talks to Eavis he learns that the policeman believes Rheiner's story to be a fake, and that there is a connection to a jewel robbery and the untimely death of one of the thieves. However the Moons and Cecile agree to join forces with Rheiner in order to recover the missing diamonds for the insurance money. Eavis learns that Rheiner is a murderer and warns Trevor and Cecile, who arrange for Zelda to conduct a séance at which she 'contacts' the dead Legionnaire. As a result of this the diamonds are located in an engine shed on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, although Trevor manages to substitute fakes which are then stolen at gunpoint by Rh
After an old lady commits suicide her heir accuses Gladys of having defrauded her, but soon realises her error and enlists Gladys's help in locating the real criminal. Trevor begins investigating, and discovers that other old ladies have also died in similar circumstances – two of whom were patients of Dr Shan, a Chinese healer. While Eavis arranges exhumations Gladys investigates Dr Shan, and his next potential victim turns to her for help – a timely decision, as her jewellery is stolen shortly afterwards. When Gladys confronts Shan he takes her hostage at gunpoint and demands clear access to a cross-Channel ferry. Eavis arranges for his car to be decoyed aboard an empty ferry and then the police – including the Chief Constable – stall for time while Trevor sets up an outrageous pantomime with firecrackers and a Chinese mask which spooks Dr Shan into giving himself up.
Making her radio debut, Gladys becomes friendly with Kate, a pop singer turned DJ, whose ex-husband, Napley, is currently promoting a faith healer, Merritt, who believes he is receiving songs dictated from the spirit world by John Lennon. A record producer is interested but demands 'authentication' and Napley consults Gladys, who checks out Merritt and believes him to be sincere, if not genuine. Trevor also asks Eavis for his opinion of Merritt, and he and Cecile attend a recording session at which Kate sings the new 'Lennon' songs. Gladys's horoscope for Merritt predicts violent death, but when Trevor goes to warn him he finds the man already dead. Napley, the prime suspect in the killing, vanishes, but Trevor and Kate drive out to Dungeness and find him beaten up by money-lenders he has welched on, while Eavis's men are able to locate and apprehend the real killer.
The staff of a deceased aristocrat are desperate to locate her Will and consult Gladys, who suggests dowsing for it. Early results are not impressive, but Trevor becomes interested in a walnut writing-desk which has been taken away by the auctioneers. An elderly servant is arrested for theft of some silverware and Gladys turns to Eavis for help. She also persuades Zelda to hold a séance, at which she raises the spirit of the furniture maker who built the desk. Trevor realises that the original desk has been copied for a Japanese buyer, and subsequently horrifies Gladys and Cecile when he bids for the original at auction. However he then reveals that he has discovered the missing Will concealed in it.
Gladys befriends returning honeymooners Ray and Lorna, who are concerned about a man they met in Venice who has subsequently disappeared. They give her a videotape containing footage of their mysterious friend, but shortly afterwards Lorna confronts men searching her luggage on the Orient Express and when she runs away from them she falls from the train and is killed. Soon after this Trevor finds three men ransacking the 'Visions' horsebox, as a result of which he returns the tape to Ray and they watch it together. Trevor recognises the man on the tape as one of the three burglars, but when he informs Eavis of this the police officer reveals that the three are in fact Special Branch men who had been escorting a Mafia informant to England. Insultingly, they 'apologise' for the accidental death of Lorna. Gladys is deceived into working for an Italian businessman who in fact kidnaps her, although she takes it very calmly and ends up doing tarot readings for the kidnappers. Trevor brin
A body is found in the boot of a car owned by Garvie, a British politician who denies all knowledge. Gladys recognises the victim as someone she met briefly in Lille, and from clues she is able to provide Sardou locates the victim's lodgings and identifies her. Meanwhile Gladys befriends Garvie's wife, Annabelle. The dead girl worked at a health club fronted by former tennis star 'Raz' Matasse. However when Cecile talks to an artist friend of hers she learns that the club is in fact a high class brothel and the girl was working as a prostitute. However by the time Sardou goes to interview the artist, the man has already been murdered. Gladys, Trevor and Cecile investigate the health club and at first all goes well, but then they are all taken prisoner while snooping around and it is left to Sardou and his men to effect a dramatic rescue, which also results in the arrest of one of Sardou's senior colleagues. Garvie, however, is shown to be innocent, and is released to the custody o
An unbalanced elderly lady, Agnes, suddenly tells Gladys about a murder. The woman's doctor consults a senior psychiatrist, Milestone, who is quite perturbed by the news, although Eavis is disinclined to take Gladys at all seriously. One of Milestone's shady acquaintances, Parks, shoots Gladys's friend Zelda in mistake for Gladys. On police advice a phoney funeral is staged for Gladys, which she insists on directing herself, and even turns up at disguised as her own sister. The supposed death of Gladys distresses Agnes; she makes contact with Trevor, who finally persuades Eavis to listen to her story about the death of Milestone's first wife. At a preposterous memorial service for Gladys, Parks attempts to kill Agnes – at which point Eavis is able to step in and arrest both him and Milestone. Zelda, meanwhile, is enjoying her stay in hospital – especially when Gladys turns up with a supply of booze.
In a lonely area Cecile is the victim of an attack which Sardou believes may have been carried out by a serial killer he is trying to trace. Shortly afterwards a beachcomber stumbles on the body of a further victim and sees a man running away; Cecile, however, is unable to pick him out of an identity parade and the man denies attacking her. Trying to track down Cecile's attacker Trevor borrows astrological software from a business rival of Gladys's, and although Sardou is scornful at first it emerges that Trevor has produced some useful information enabling Eavis to tie the attacks in France with a further one in England. Cecile returns to Folkestone with the Moons, ostensibly to forget about her experience. However when Gladys helps her to focus on a minor detail about the man – he had half of one finger missing – it puts Sardou on the trail of a previous suspect, who is currently stalking Cecile in England. Although the man succeeds in luring her to an isolated spot, Trevor arrive
A metal-detectorist finds a plate with astrological symbols on an ancient site and asks Gladys to help him identify it. His visit is followed by another from a sinister ex-military man asking uncomfortable questions. Gladys enquires into the origins of the plate - for which she has to recruit Trevor, with whom she has fallen out. They arrive at the site to find Eavis dealing with the detectorist's death in a microlight accident. Then Gladys's contact at the local museum is found dead, and Gladys herself is accused of theft. Investigating in an attempt to clear her name, she is taken prisoner by her sinister visitor of earlier. Trevor and Cecile, meanwhile, are looking for a man who was billeted locally during the War; it seems the local people are covering up after a massacre of escaping German POWs, whose bodies are buried at the archaeological site. Trevor rushes to rescue Gladys, but her kidnapper is shot dead by the elderly officer he has been trying to protect.
French police are looking for a missing Englishman, World War II re-enactor GI Joe Thorpe. Trevor learns Eavis is also involved in the hunt, and Gladys is dragged in when a French private investigator asks her to help him locate the body. This does not go down well with either set of police officers but they agree to allow her to use Joe's jeep for psychometry, even though she does it in front of a local TV news crew. Gladys befriends the parents of the missing man, learning all about his role-playing activities. When Trevor goes to talk to Joe's fellow re-enactors he learns that the man had battled with drug addiction, which is confirmed by his parents. When the private investigator is found murdered, Trevor traces his movements and it begins to seem as if the systematic theft of classic cars is at the root of the mystery, so Trevor and Gladys concoct a scheme to smoke out the thieves. To Sardou's amazement this works, and enables police to follow one of the suspects back to their
Sergeant Eavis is investigating a series of zodiac-inspired murders, and his Chief Constable feels they need expert advice. The Chief Constable recruits James Wainwright, an old adversary of Gladys's, while Eavis consults Gladys, setting the two psychics at each other's throats. A TV appearance by Wainwright provokes Gladys into publicly challenging him, and she later goes on to accuse him of the actual murders. However Trevor and Cecile learn that all three victims have in some way wronged a fourth man, Richard Parris, whom Gladys recognises as a man who had come to her earlier for a palm reading, but had scoffed because her conclusions did not match a reading given to him many years before by James Wainwright. This leads her to believe that Wainwright may be the next intended victim. Eavis will no longer listen to her, so she and Trevor resolve to warn Wainwright themselves. Thrown out of his lecture they sneak in through the kitchens and arrive just in time to save him from an e
When a dead Englishman is discovered dumped in Dieppe, a receipt leads Inspector Maurice Sardou to Gladys Moon and her son Trevor. It appears that Gladys, too, has been attacked, and police quickly arrest a student. Trevor believes this is a mistake, as he's sure Gladys's attacker used a toy gun; the murder weapon, however, is soon recovered, and it's real – and lethal – enough. In England, Trevor links the dead man to alleged corruption by contractors building the Channel Tunnel and talks to the man's colleague, Dunblane, and also to the widow. As a result two heavies take both Gladys and Trevor's girlfriend Cecile hostage, threatening Trevor also before being routed by Cecile. The English police warn Trevor to stay clear of the investigation, but back in France he is challenged by Sardou to help exonerate the student by dowsing for the alleged toy gun. A witness comes forward who saw the real gun thrown away, and while Sardou and the English police pursue this lead Gladys learns
