While eating lunch, Charlie Brown talks to himself about his unrequited love for the Little Red-Haired Girl. When he notices that the Little Red-Haired Girl is looking in his direction, Charlie Brown becomes extremely embarrassed and puts his paper sack over his head. With the paper sack covering his face, Charlie Brown continues to talk about how sad he is that the Little Red-Haired Girl does not even know him, much to Linus' disgust. Linus berates his friend for feeling sorry for himself instead of simply introducing himself to the Little Red-Haired Girl. Charlie Brown decides that Linus is right. He goes over to sit on the same bench as the Little Red-Haired Girl. Unfortunately for Charlie Brown, he is only brave enough to sit on the bench after the Little Red-Haired Girl has left.
Peppermint Patty asks Charlie Brown if she is beautiful; Peppermint Patty is convinced she got an F because of her big nose; Charlie Brown does not understand Peppermint Patty's conversation. Peppermint Patty and Lucy are going to get their ears pierced, but, during Peppermint Patty's turn, Lucy runs away.
Peppermint Patty does not understand love and wants Charlie Brown to explain it to her. Lucy insists to Schroeder that flowers mean true love. Lucy tries to help Charlie Brown understand the equation of love. Lucy wants to know if Schroeder will love her when she is old and crabby. Lucy imagines a married life with Schroeder.
