After Daniel meets his mother in Genoa and learns the circumstances of his birth and childhood, the Grandcourts have serious trouble while small boat sailing. Ultimately, Daniel makes decisions on a marriage and his life.

Meanwhile, Daniel discovers that Mordecai is Mirah's long-lost brother, Ezra. Daniel's mother is dying and wants to see him; she is in Italy. Daniel keeps his promise to visit Gwendolen before he goes, but her husband returns home to find them alone in the house together. There, he meets The Contessa, a celebrated opera diva who holds the key to his past.

Daniel continues looking for Mirah's family and meets a man who could be her brother called Ezra Cohen. Grandcourt tells Gwen lies about Daniel in order to get her to think badly of him.

Daniel sees Gwendolen Harleth in instantly knows that he wants to see her more. Later, Daniel decides that he wishes to leave University in order to go to Germany to pursue his love, Gwen. After being in Germany Daniel returns to England and saves a young woman named Mirah from drowning herself.
